Mesa Public School District & The Boeing Company

Goal: To leverage resources in support of systemic and continuous improvement in the school system, concentrating on teacher effectiveness in math, science and literacy and impacting student achievement.
Strategy:

Increase teacher effectiveness through programs that elevate teacher skills and improve student knowledge, performance and achievement in math and science. Provide highly motivational and relevant teaching concepts to reach at-risk students, boosting achievement and self-esteem.

Tactics:

Utilize school district and company resources to impact teacher skills and student success.

  • Collaborate to identify community, school district and student needs.
  • Work with school district curriculum staff to create lesson plans to build teaching skills and facilitate learning in math and science.
  • Coordinate company volunteers to assist teachers and mentor students. Volunteers contribute more than 1,500 hours annually.

Key programs include:

  • Math Academy: Teacher math skill training and after-school math academy for grades 3-6 (2 days/week).
  • Flight Centers: Professional development for 5th-grade teachers in delivery of flight curriculum to science classes.
  • Shuttle Mission Simulation: Fifth- and sixth-grade teachers learn delivery of the new integrated math and science "shuttle mission" curriculum, wireless technology and simulation utilizing the mobile shuttle vehicle.
  • Connected Curriculum: Multi-tiered professional teacher development integrating science, math, reading and writing.
  • Highly Qualified Cohort in Science: Teachers attend graduate level college courses to become highly qualified science teachers.
Results:

Outcomes include:

  • Through increase in Math Academy teacher skills, students consistently improve math achievement each year. Student test scores increased significantly every year, outpacing peer students. More than 3,000 students have been impacted.
  • High school senior exit surveys indicate Flight Centers and the Shuttle Simulation play a major role in college and career selections toward science and engineering.
  • More than 200 teachers have learned the integration of core academic areas of science, math, reading and writing. Teachers improve management of learning time, impacting student achievement.
  • Twenty-five teachers attended graduate science education programs to obtain highly-qualified certification.
