Almost 50 percent of Baldwin-Mercy participants in Shadow Day exceed
Baldwin's academic standards. Baldwin-Marcy participants improved their
academic performance by 25 percent and their attendance by
28 percent in 2006.
The partnership garnered recognition by high-profile media including
The New York Times, Newsday, The Daily News, The
Baldwin Herald, The Freeport Baldwin Leader, Long Island
Catholic, and Career Island Magazine, in addition to earning
public praise from Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY).
The Baldwin-Mercy partnership was the foundation and prototype for such
other Baldwin School District partnerships as Hofstra University, Citibank,
Northrop-Grumman, State Farm Insurance, Junior Achievement, Jones Beach
State Park, Long Island Mentoring Partnership, and Century 21.
South Nassau Communities Hospital and Long Beach Hospital approached
Baldwin School District about expanding the shadow day opportunity to
emphasize key medical specialties such as physical therapy, pharmacy
and radiology.
The Partnership has evolved to all grade levels within the Baldwin School
District. Baldwin middle school students participate in the Nursing Exploration
Program, a unique weeklong summer program. Baldwin elementary students
create colorful and uplifting "tent" cards for patient meal
trays.
Medical Explorers Club is a program for 9-12th graders who meet with
hospital employees monthly to learn all facets of hospital life. Weekly
meetings serve as an after-school club for community service and fundraising.
The Mercy-Baldwin program for Students with Developmental Disabilities
(SDD) trains students to work with Mercy employees who act as job coaches
in the environmental services department.
