James Walker Elementary, Blue Springs R-IV School District and
Cochran, Oswald and Roam LLC
(Blue Springs, MO)

Goal: To enrich academics, build community presence and parental support, and raise students' motivation and self esteem.
Strategy:

A contrived trial, known as a Mock Trial where students and professionals imitate various roles in the courtroom.

Tactics: Parents of James Walker Elementary (JWE) students meet with attorneys from the school's small business partner, Cochran, Oswald and Roam, LLC (CO&R) to obtain an understanding of the judicial system and study their roles in the annual Mock Trial scenario.

Law clerks from CO&R volunteer at JWE to share law process and the responsibility of citizens to fifth graders. Clerks assist the class in selecting a jury of students.

Attorneys from CO&R play the role of prosecutor, defense attorney and judge. The firm's office manager arranges and coordinates the staff, courtroom, and plays the role of court clerk.

Many JWE fifth grade students act as courtroom artists sketching and recording the events of the trial. The sketches and writing samples are displayed at JWE and the law offices of CO&R. Each student whose artwork or writing is displayed at OC&R receives recognition in the local newspaper, The Examiner.

Parents of the students whose work is displayed at the law firm receive a personal letter sent by the law firm inviting them, family, and friends to view the displayed work. Included with the letter is a laminated copy of The Examiner.

The district hosts an annual fall "kick-off" breakfast, for all school/business partnerships. For this event, JWE invites students, law firm and school staff representatives to participate. The event is an opportunity to celebrate the partnership's success in using project-based learning to enhance academic achievement in the classroom.

Results: School attendance has increased to 96 percent.

The percentage of students scoring at the proficient or advanced levels on the Missouri social studies tests has increased 44 percent in the last four years and in science, the percentage has increased 21 percent over the last four years.

In social studies, JWE has moved from being 11 percent behind the school district average to placing 8 percent above the district average.
