Ohio Avenue Elementary and National City Bank
(Columbus, Ohio)

Goal: Prepare students for academic and career success by sharing community resources and business support.
Strategy:

Provide ongoing intervention through tutoring and exposure to diverse educational, cultural and enrichment activities.

Tactics: National City Bank's 100 volunteers ensure that every kindergarten student receives individually tailored reading lessons for one hour each week through the ColumbusReads program. The volunteers also provide tutoring to fourth graders in preparation for the Ohio Fourth Grade Proficiency Test.

To encourage the students' appreciation for the arts, cultural and enrichment opportunities were introduced by National City Bank through collaborations with local organizations including Columbus Symphony, Capital University, Ohio Historical Center, Thurber Center Gallery, Columbus Museum of Art and the Opera Columbus. Activities included field trips, classroom speakers, educational activities and performances.

National City Bank also sponsors academic all-stars assemblies, supports supervision of field trips, hosts an annual 5th Grade Career Pathway Tour and funded the school's Scientific Reading Lab.

Results: In the Columbus Reads program, student reading scores improved from 52.8 percent pre-test to 87.5 percent post-test, which is significantly above the district average of 31.3 percent.

Ohio Fourth Grade Proficiency Test scores have continuously improved over the years, with reading scores increasing from 21.7 percent in 2002 to 32.1 percent in 2004. Math scores increased from 14.5 percent in 2002 to 20.7 percent in 2004. Science improved from 2.6 percent in 2002 to 17 percent in 2004. Citizenship scores also improved from 20 percent in 2002 to 22.6 percent in 2004.

In the cultural enrichment area, Thurber Center Gallery and National City Bank engaged respected children's book author and illustrator, Floyd Cooper to demonstrate the illustration process to students and lead a special small-group project with a selected group of young artists.

Students performed with stars from Opera Columbus in the premiere of the 30-minute opera, Monkey See, Monkey Do, the result of an Opera Columbus residency at the school.

National City Bank has been named Partner of the Year by the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce.
