Brookhaven Elementary and Monongalia Health System
(Morgantown, West Virginia)

Goal: Encourage students to be caring citizens of the world while also educating them in the areas of health and wellness, economics and helping build self-esteem.
Strategy: Provide a quality education in academics and citizenship, as well as personal growth to nurture qualified future employees for the community.
Tactics: To promote health and wellness issues and economics, business partners offer monthly education presentations on relevant topics. Partners then help the staff create incentive programs to further the lessons. Programs developed by the partners include an accelerated reader program, a student bank, an academic improvement program and a walking program.

The Accelerated Reader Program was created to improve reading skills. Volunteers take lessons from reading and transfer them into other subject areas including geography. Business partners also participate in "Read to Me Day" to encourage an appreciation for reading.

Building a bank within the school offers students lessons on savings and provides volunteers an opportunity to create programs on money and finance. This program aims to develop responsible customers who will contribute to the success of the banking industry.

Monongalia Health System encourages students to participate in Kidstride, a supervised recess-walking program, encouraging cardiovascular conditioning. Students participate in health screenings at the beginning and end of the year to evaluate the value of exercise.

Students make monthly visits to Mon Health System's affiliate locations to understand the importance of community involvement. The students read to younger students and perform plays and create crafts with the elderly.

Results: Books checked out have increased from 13,599 to 22,125.

116 students in grades K-5 increased their G.P.A.s by at least 0.4 percent.

BB&T sponsors a monthly school bank day where over half of the students are participating in a savings account program.

Blood pressure and weight loss have improved. Blood pressure has decreased on average by two percent and those over their ideal weight decreased their weight by three percent.

Speaking opportunities at community involvement programs have encouraged self-confidence and valuable lessons in caring and serving others.

Additional partners include West Virginia Public Theatre, Suburban Lanes Bowling Center and BB&T.
